THIS BOOK IS DEDICATED to all men and women who fought and died in the Philippine Islands during World War II and in the defense of Bataan and Corregidor, and to all those who worked so hard at the time of World War II, be it at home or on the battle fields to save the world from becoming slaves to two world powers that tried to take away our basic right to be free people and to live as God intended us to live with the right to determine our own destiny;
To the men and women who have worn the uniform to serve their country since the formation of the republic;
To my dear friend and working partner on Bataan, Gerald Block, whom the Japanese burned alive at Nichols Field. His personal bravery during the fighting was an inspiration to me and to many other American and Filipino scouts and solders;
To the families that never knew what happened to their loved ones;
To the men and women who never saw our American flag fly again after the Japanese raised the Rising Sun Flag over our dead. May God be with them and never let us forget the cost of freedom paid for with our men and women's blood that was not shed in vain. Let their sacrifice be a shinning light for future generations, and teach them that freedom must be preserved at all costs. No one knows what slavery is all about until he has walked in the shoes of those who have been slaves;
To my family, which suffered long and sorely, waiting to know if I were still alive; To my cherished friend, Dr. James Strickhausen, who
has done so much to support my effort in making this book a reflection of my experiences through a long and difficult time in my life. I give him my special thanks. Without him this book would never have been published;
And to the following people who did so much to make Hell's Guest a reality: my wife, Elizabeth Terri Frazier; Dr. Ferrel Killingsworth; Mrs. Frances S. Weiner; and my publisher, Dr. Tom Williams.
